New knee arthritis treatment delivers lasting pain relief without surgery - Science Daily

A new minimally invasive procedure, called genicular artery embolization (GAE), shows promise in providing long-term relief for patients with osteoarthritis-related knee pain. In a study of 194 patients, GAE, which involves targeting abnormal blood vessels in the knee to reduce inflammation and pain, resulted in significant pain reduction and increased mobility for at least 12 months. Approximately 80% of patients reported notable pain relief after a year. The technique utilizes tiny, dissolvable particles to block specific blood vessels, avoiding the need for knee replacement surgery. While the findings are encouraging, researchers stress the need for further studies to ascertain the durability and overall effectiveness of GAE. This approach represents a potential alternative for those who have already exhausted conventional treatments.
